Description
A commissioned watercolor painting about the traditional Rabelo Boats in Porto Portugal, with the double decker Dom Luis I bridge in the background.
Rabelo boats, in Portuguese Barcos Rabelos are traditional Portuguese Cargo Boats which were used to transport wine barrels, goods, and people for centuries along the River Douro. It is a traditional boat which do not exist in other place of the World, is originated from the Douro Region. The history of the boats are linked with the trade and production of the World famous Port Wine. Before the railway arrived in the area, the Rabelo Boats were the fastest solution to transport the wine between the Douro Valley, and O Porto city, where the wine was traded and exported all over the World. Although they are not in use anymore, even today we can see several of these unique and beautiful vessels on the Douro River, advertising Port Wine companies, or using for tourism purposes. On June 24, the day of St John, every year is held a race of the Barcos Rabelos, a very popular and important festival of Porto.
