Description
The title for my new watercolor painting is Abandoned Portuguese Windmill, because is about a lonely old mill, out of work and without blades, but in reality this mill has lots of company day by day, as it is one of the three windmills in the fluvial beach of Alburrica, in the city of Barreiro, Portugal.
The usage of the wind power has a long tradition in Portugal, because of the strong winds coming from the Atlantic Ocean, and nowadays these old mills are one by one finding new functions, as they have been turned into for instance museums, lodgings, restaurants or snack bars, gift shops, or private homes.
The three windmills in Alburrica were built in 1852 called Gigante, Poente and Nascente the last one is which I was painting about. Gigante is the biggest one was build in the style of the mills in the Netherlands and was closed in 1919, the two smaller mills called Sunset and Sunrise are build in the common style of Portuguese windmills, and they stopped working in 1950.
They are all three renovated now, and possible to visit them and take look inside.
I hope you will enjoy my new watercolor painting about a Portuguese windmill with dramatic clouds.
Thank you for considering supporting my art!
