Portuguese Azulejos 01 photograph by Dora Hathazi Mendes. Azulejos is the Portuguese name for tiles, which can be found as decoration everywhere in Portugal. On walls of churches, houses, monasteries, palaces, outside and inside, shops, railway stations, even park seats, or fountains, practically on every surface where possible to lay tiles. Although tiles are not Portuguese invention, it is used more consistently and imaginatively in Portugal, than in any other nation. Is became an art form very early, and by the 18th century Portugal was the leader of producing many tiles for wide variety of purposes, and till today is a very important part of the architecture of the country.
On Azulejos sometimes there are historical scenes, ships, ocean, traditional elements, or simply nameplates, house numbers or names, street names and signs, etc.
On my photo there is a detail of the well-known vine producing cellar of Jose Maria da Fonseca in Vila Nogueria de Azeitao and serve as an exterior decoration of the building.
